Calculate the ratio of your natural waist to your full hips. Measure both in the same unit.

Compare your natural waist and full hip measurements to calculate your waist-to-hip ratio.

Where is my waist?
  1. Stand naturally and breathe out gently.
  2. Find your natural waist, usually the narrower area between your lowest ribs and the top of your hip bones. You can bend gently to one side to locate the waist crease.
  3. Wrap a flexible measuring tape around that point. Keep it level and snug without pulling tight or holding your stomach in.
Where do I measure my hips?
  1. Stand with your feet together.
  2. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, usually lower than the hip bones.
  3. Check in a mirror that the tape is parallel to the floor. Record your hip circumference in the same unit you used for your waist.
How is the waist-to-hip ratio calculated?
  1. Divide your waist circumference by your hip circumference. For example, a 74 cm waist divided by 100 cm hips gives 0.74.
  2. This is a simple proportion for comparing measurements. It does not diagnose a health condition or determine your clothing size.

For general guidance only. Body proportions are descriptive, not a measure of health or worth. This is not a medical assessment.
